Getting Into Cambodia

CAMBODIAN VISA AND TRANSIT VISA

As long as your passport has not expired, Cambodian visa can be obtained at Arrival in Siem Reap Airport, Phnom Penh Airport and border crossing checkpoint with Thailand, Vietnam and Loas. The price of a Cambodian Visa is US$ 20 can use 30 days in Cambodia.

Bus Services

Bus travel is now the most popular means of overland transport between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and Poi Pet - Siem Reap Angkor. The road (National Route #6) is paved and smooth and there are several regularly scheduled daily buses in both directions, ( Phnom Penh - Siem Reap ) taking only 5 or 6 hours to make the trip. ( Poi Pet - Siem Reap only 2 hours to make the trip.)

River Ferry

Daily ferries runs on the Tonle Sap river and lake between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and Battambang province. The end of the trip is marked by a hill, Phnom Krom, near the ferry dockyard at Chong Khneas 12 km south of Siem Reap Angkor. During the dry season when the water is low, the ferry stops short of the dockyard and passengers transfer to smaller boats to traverse the final few hundred meters.

International Overland Border Crossings

Cambodia shares overland border crossings with Thailand at Poipet, Koh Kong, O'smach, Pailin, Kam Reang and Unlung Veng checkpoint. Cambodia shares an overland border crossing with Vietnam at Bavet and Moc Bai checkpoint.Cambodia shares an overland border crossing with Lao country at Voeung Kam checkpoint.
Banking and Money

Riels are used as the Cambodian currency. The Riel notes start from 100 and go all the way to 100,000. The notes are as follows:
100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000. The Exchange rate is 1 USD = 4,000Riel. US dollars are a widely used currency in Cambodia , but you will need some Cambodian Riels to make small purchases. 500 and 1000 Riels note are the most common and useful denominations. Hotels and most restaurants set prices in US dollars. Some places accept credit cards
and traveler cheque. Master Card and American Express are coming into wider use. Most businesses charge a 2% to 4% fee to accept credit cards.

Communication

Cambodian country calling country code is 855. International calls run less than $3 per minute. Local calls are 500 Riel/ minute and domestic long distances are $1 per minute. Some of the Internet places offer very inexpensive Internet phone service.

Materials and Clothes

Cambodia is a hot country so you do not need to bring winter clothing with you. Wear light, airy, clothing to protect yourself from the sun. The sun can be intense so bring a hat, and sunglasses. Carry an umbrella or raincoat with you during the wet season, wear practical shoes for climbing narrow steps and walking on uneven surfaces. Photographers should prepare for very bright light outdoor and heavily shadowed indoor photography, bring very low and high ASA films, a lens sun shield and a couple of extra batteries.
Working Hour
Cambodian offices and others start to open their offices at 7:30AM to 11:30AM. Resting at afternoon to start it again at 14:00PM to 17:00PM closed Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Cambodia standard time is seven hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. It is in the same time zone as Vietnam , Laos and Thailand .

Religion

The religion governed the concept and execution of all Khmer art and architecture is enhanced by an understanding of the religious beliefs of the Khmers.
According to belief, when a person died his soul was reincarnated and his spirit became free. The former religious practices, which were adopted in Cambodia at a later date recognized a common belief in rebirth , the idea that one is born again and again in different forms. At the present time, 90% of the
the Cambodian people are of the Buddhist religion. Hinduism for the most part has gone away.

Food Facts

In Cambodia , 85% of the population depends on their own agriculture. Their main source of food is rice, which they grow only once a year. This is only through the rainy season, which starts in May and ends in October. The Cambodian's only grow enough rice to feed 85% of their population with about 2 meals a day. The rice grown is 90% rice paddy and 10% glutinous rice.
Climate
Cambodia has tropical weather, which makes the country very warm and humid. The maximum temperature ranges from 26.5oc to 27.5oc (April is the hottest month) and the minimum temperature ranges from 24oc to 26.5oc (December is the coolest month). These temperatures can vary in mountainous and plateau areas. Because Cambodia 's seasons are affected by monsoons they are not too hot or too cool. In Cambodia , the temperature changes less than 4c, through out the year so it is very suitable for tourists.

Cambodia has two main seasons:

Dry season: From November to April, affected by dry wind, which blows from Siberi (Northeast Monsoon).
Rainy season: From May to October, affected by wind bringing rain, which blows from the sea to the continent (Southwest Monsoon). The two seasons might change a little from year to year and area to area.

Wanna - The Greatest Tour Guide in Cambodia

Kelly recommended this tour guide to me 3 weeks before we left for Cambodia.
After few correspondences with him via email, WANNA (aka Yun Wanna) officially became our tour guide for the temple visiting.
I wonder if it is due to the female-dominant culture or the mindset of a traditional Cambodian, he was surprised when he found out it was a She (instead of a Guy) who sent him the emails during
our first meet up in Le Tigre De Papie. He guided us for 4 days,including the trip to Angkor City (3-days), Beng Mealea temple and Tonle Sap Lake. Besides telling good legends, he is good in taking photographs, he knows which angle or poses are the best to potray the magnificent view of the tourist spots.
To be frank, I have never meet any impressive tour guide in my life. Wanna is the first who change my stereotype on a tour guide. I remember how he guided us along the journey, I respect his professionalism and passion into his guiding job, I remember how he cheered me up on the second day of the temple visiting, I remember how he called me 'philip, philip...' throughout the journey...WANNA, we appreaciate all your efforts.
As a tour guide, you have done a great job. You are the best companion of our trip!! Some says:"When the going gets tough, the tough gets going", YES!! The challenges and the hardships that we encountered and passed through along the journey will defnitely become one of the utmost traveling in our life!!

I and my group (altogether 5 women) spent 5 days in Cambodia. We arranged our program in advance with Sowanna and he booked for us an excellent hotel as we agreed on it. Our trip was excellent and memorable thank to our guide to Sowanna. He’s a very talented, experienced guide so we could rely on him every time.
He’s very flexible and accomplised all of our wishes. For example On the way to Beng Melea – to a distant but a very interesting and intact place – we realized in a village that a wedding ceremony was held and as we were interested

Kampong Pluk is one of the three Floating Villages of the bank along the Tonle Sap lake. The stilted house built within the floodplain of the lake about 16 kms Southeast of Siem Reap town. It is a stilted house and it is a beautiful rather than Chong Kneas Floating Village. The houses are stilted to around 6 meters in heigh. You can go to visit this Kampong Pluk every year on September until January.

Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary/Area

Prek Toal is an area of the Tonle Sap lake who reserved as Biosphere. The Biosphere covers 31,282 hectares at the Northwest tip of Tonle Sap lake and it has many species of the large waterbirds such as : Black - headed Ibis, Painted Stork, Milky Stork, Spot - billed Pelican, Grey - headed fish Eagle and many more species. Prek Toal is the most accessible from Siem Reap and the most beautiful bird area. You can go to visit Bird Area in between November and January every year but the best time to visit there on December.

Cambodia finds its 1st ancient ironworks site in history

PHNOM PENH, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Apsara Authority of Cambodia has found and excavated for the first time in its history the ancient ironworks site at Khav village, Khav commune, Chi-kreng district of Siem Reap province where is the home of Angkor Wat temple, the local media reported on Saturday."We have excavated four sites and each site has size of five meters in length and two meters in width, and we also found iron mines, some potteries, pieces of cook, some bamboos, other ancient materials, and a tube for blowing the air into the ancient cook to melt the iron stone," the khmer language newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea quoted Ea Darith, deputy director of temple conservation for external affairs of Angkor wat park as saying, who is also expert for leading the excavation group."Those sites were used for melting iron mines and it was belonged to aborigine "Kouy" and their relatives still exist in living in Cambodia now," he said. "They melted those iron mines to produce as guns, swords, javelins, and other daily households including axes, knifes, and chisels for the king at that time," he added. "According to the analysis on potteries, those sites were constructed in the 11th or 13th century," Ea Darith said.At the same time, Apsara Authority also found the ancient Chinese ointment containers which Khmer imported from China. "Khmer and Chinese people got married and lived at Angkor Wat region at that time. So we could find them," he said, adding that those ancient Chinese ointment containers were made in 12th or 13th century."Our excavation of the sites was stopped temporarily because our experts need to take those materials for laboratory and took photos to print on books for keeping for next generation to research. There are five sites of iron works here and we will excavate one more in the future at the area," according to Ea Darith.

Dying Young: Malaria killed Mouhot in the Lao wilderness.
Henri Mouhot became famous for discovering Cambodia's 'lost' Angkor, but he travelled widely. That's why his bones are in LaosHenri Mouhot, the Frenchman whose 19th-century rediscovery of Cambodia's Angkor temple complex sparked a romantic "See Angkor and die" fad in the West, saw Angkor and died - in Laos.His grave just outside Luang Prabang was all but forgotten until 1990 when tourists stumbled on it. Today any local tour guide can arrange a visit.Alexandre Henri Mouhot's collection of delightful sketches, "Travels in the Central Parts of Indo-China, Cambodia and Laos During the Years 1858, 1859 and 1860", was published in London following his death in 1861, and his description of Angkor's "exotic abandoned ruins" caused considerable excitement.Missionaries and traders had been writing about the mediaeval Khmer temples since the 16th century, but Mouhot's evocation truly caught the public imagination.The catchphrase "See Angkor and die" - presumably happily - that swept the West became the title of a romantic film that Norodom Sihanouk directed in 1993 while he was still Cambodia's king.Born in 1826 in Montbeliard, France, Mouhot was gifted in languages and the natural sciences. His interests were almost certainly piqued by the 1850s books "The Kingdom and People of Siam" by Britain's Sir James Bowring and "Description of the Siam Kingdom" by French Bishop Jean-Baptiste Pallegoix.Mouhot mounted an expedition to Southeast Asia with the support of London's Royal Geographical and Zoological societies, and arrived in Bangkok on April 27, 1858.Over the next three years he made four excursions, two of them within Siam. The second took him into Cambodia to Angkor, the fourth to Luang Prabang in Laos.He mapped the territory en route, although, as mentioned in his journals, his equipment broke before he finished his map of Siam. In part because of this, France and Britain concluded that Siam extended only as far as the Chao Phya River basin, which appeared to give it the perfect dimensions for "buffer state" between their own neighbouring colonies.In 1861 Mouhot spent three months crossing dense jungle from Loei to Luang Prabang and planned to follow the Mekong River's current into Cambodia, but on October 19, outside Luang Prabang, he was suddenly struck by malarial fever. His last diary entry was dated October 29, and he died on November 10, age 35.Mouhot's servants buried the explorer on a bank of Khan River at the spot where he died. All of his journals and specimens were sent to his family in England. It was his brother who published the diaries.Commander Doudart de Lagree, leader of the French government's Mekong Exploration Commission of 1866-1868, ordered a modest monument erected on a slope with a sandstone panel that read "H Mouhot, May 1867" to commemorate the first Frenchman to visit this part of Laos.The monument was destroyed when the Khan River flooded and was replaced in 1887 by a more durable structure.Restoration work was done on the tomb in 1951 by the Ecole Francaise d'Extreme Orient, but after that the site was abandoned to the encroaching jungle.Only in 1990 did tourists accidentally rediscover it, and the town of Mouhot's birth, Montbeliard, arranged for the grave's restoration.History regards Henri Mouhot with mixed emotions. He was a scientist, a bold explorer and a cartographer who, in a sense, gave Angkor back to the world.And yet those same maps he made paved the way for France's expanding colonial empire in Indochina, a foreign presence that remained in control until 1954.

I would like you to notice some sentences before you will arrive in Cambodia because I had experienced with my client at the end of 1992 AD during the United Nations sent his personnel ( 13,000 soldiers and over 7,000 civil servants and police officers ) to arrange an Election in Cambodia because of our country was just finished the war.
One day, I brought a UN officer to visit Angkor Areas on Saturday and Sunday by my Motorcycle but I could not speak English. I had have only a Angkor Map. If he wanted to visit any temple that needed it. He had always pointed his finger to the temple picture on the map. But, when he finished the trip in one temple, He traveled with me on the Motorcycle and he told me : Toilet ! Toilet ! Toilet ! Toilet !. I thought that Toilet ! Toilet ! Toilet is the name of the temple so I pressed the speed of the Motorcycle and drove it fast and fast,sudenly. He held my arm to stop the Motorcycle and then He ran into the forest. When he came back from the forest. He laughed all the times. He was not angry to me. When he finished the trips with me in 2 day visiting. He talked with me a lots but I did not understand his speaking. I took my 2 fingers up ( v ) and then he gave me $200 but my idea is only $20 for Two day trips. I was very happy to receive $200 from him. His $200 to make me to be a guide in Cambodia and can speak 3 foreign languages. As English , Thai and Spanish is under study. Khmer language is our mother tongue.
